Raviolino Gourmet Pasta & Foods

It’s a bit off the usual shopping circuit—by all rights, this place should be the toast of Granville Island or Hastings-Sunrise—but it’s more than worth the trip (you probably needed to drop by neighbouring Drexoll Games to pick up some 20-sided dice anyway). Fine, fresh pasta—regular, organic, reduced carb—all made right in the store. Superb prepared dishes that taste great, even from frozen. Innovative culinary crossbreeding (Italian-slash-Peruvian), thanks to the union of owners Giuseppe and Marie Frasca. A varied deli selection, bulk and catering services, a room full of spotless machines designed to compel pasta into marvellous shapes or entice it to bond with exotic South American flavours (in addition to the more traditional Italian ones): this is the kind of alchemistic combination that makes Vancouver an interesting modern city. How is it that the best lasagna and chocolate-chip cookies in town are made in the same shop, way the hell over at 4th and Macdonald?

RAVIOLINO GOURMET PASTA AND FOOD Sound of hand smiting forehead: it's been in my neighbourhood for a year? Genuflections to tech columnist Dave Watson for this tip; he says it's near his poker game. Anyway, Raviolino: great little family-run place near 4th and Macdonald. Maria Frasca is Peruvian (which explains the empanadas and caramel-filled cookies called alfajores), husband Giuseppe is Italian, and everything is made from scratch and listed on a tightly single-spaced sheet. Fresh agnolotti filled with chicken and roasted garlic; mezzaluna stuffed with the same, proscuitto, or spinach and ricotta; veggie, meat, or seafood lasagna; a slew of fresh sauces, meatballs in wine sauce, Sicilian scaccia--I'm culling at random here. Everything is priced by the 100 grams, so you can do a solo supper or a feast. I've fallen hard for the spinach soup, a simple matter of spinach, cream, and spices that warms you to your soles, and the blueberry scones so light they almost levitate.

More Raviolino Reviews:

Raviolino is family run by a really amazing group of people. Maria Frasca, from Peru, and husband Giuseppe, from Italy, make everyting from scratch. Yes, the pasta is from scratch. You can watch them doing it when you go in. They are a really friendly couple, more than willing to teach you a little about how to prepare a great dish for your family and friends. They will set you up with everything you need for a meal for one, two, or a big dinner party. You order just what you need, so nothing ever goes to waste.

I have to say I love the pasta sauces. I have had fresh pasta sauce from Granville island too, but I far prefer Raviolino.

The restaurant portion is open for lunch and some dinners (I believe), but what is really great about them is the huge variety of food you can get there to take home for your dinner or to stock up your cupboards.

Beach Picnic Ideas (Raviolino Gourmet Pasta in Kits)
Now that the warm weather is here in our pretty city, and it's actually staying bright outside at dinner time, it's time to start thinking about picnics! I had my first spontaneous beach dinner "picnic" of the season last week, with Bacon Eating Baking Girl (Bac'n Girl), and we found a great little Italian deli while driving about randomly in the west side. Raviolino Gourmet Pasta and Foods (4th at MacDonald) is the great little shop we found, where we picked up some fresh pasta dishes to take to Jericho Beach. I had their daily pasta special which includes a pasta with either meat or pommarolla sauce, garlic bread, and a soup or salad (Caesar or spinach tomato), all for $7.75, or $1 extra for a stuffed pasta. I had their beef agnolotti, a stuffed pasta, with meat sauce, and the salad. Bac'n girl had some meat lasagna. The pasta and sauce were tasty, and the spinach tomato salad was nice and big. You can also buy their fresh pasta and take it home to cook. While we were there, we were offered samples of their other dishes, including their veggie Sicilian scaccia, a tasty rolled bread filled with cheeses, spices, pommarolla sauce, and extra virgin olive oil ($1.50/100 g). We also bought a couple of their cookies called Alfajores, and they were wonderfully tender sandwich cookies filled with a yummy, gooey caramel cream. The woman at the shop (probably Maria, one of the owners) actually filled the little cookies to order, and topped them with powdered sugar. Just spending those few minutes in the store picking up our meal, I could really tell that this family takes great care in preparing their foods. It was a very satisfying meal, made all the more pleasant by enjoying the view of the ocean and mountains sitting on a blanket at the beach.
